Rockledge, FL (November 15, 2013) – Just last week Drexel Dobson, MD, a highly trained general surgeon located in Rockledge, performed a robotic assisted minimally invasive distal pancreatectomy for a distal pancreatic mass at Wuesthoff Health System, a first in this area.

Distal pancreatectomies are only usually performed minimally invasively in tertiary care centers such as the Cleveland Clinic, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins, and they are usually performed laparoscopically and most recently robotically. Dr. Dobson is the only one this year in the Orlando-Cocoa corridor, and the only one performed on the east coast south of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and north of the Cleveland Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale.

“What is really unique about this specific surgery is that it was done using a spleen sparing approach, which is much more difficult than an easier procedure that removes the pancreas and spleen,” said Dr. Dobson. “Because of this, the patient had only minimal blood loss, a minor 2.5 cm incision, and four tiny 8mm incisions. A procedure such as this will also significantly reduce length of stay”.

Dr. Dobson performs numerous minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, which offer patients shorter recovery times and less scarring. He is part of the Surgical Associates of Brevard and is located at 1004 Beverly Drive, Suites A & D in Rockledge.
